Since its introduction to the Linux kernel, EROFS has gained widespread adoption within the Linux community. For example, EROFS has become a recommended file system [1] for Android system partitions since Android 13 (2022) and has already been adopted by the majority of Android vendors. Additionally, EROFS has shipped new features upstream in the past years for the container world, such as lazy pulling over fscache, external data blobs (e.g. tarFS), and compressed data deduplication. It has also been adopted to Composefs [2], Dragonfly Nydus [3] and the recent EROFS containerd snapshotter [4] as end-to-end solutions. gVisor sandbox has supported EROFS too [5]. In this talk, we'll provide a detailed introduction to the EROFS file system, including its original targeted scenarios, the recent new features, and upcoming roadmap items, such as IAA/QAT hardware (de)compression acceleration, large folios for compressed data and more.
